Is Micro blogging Really Killing Blog?

A few weeks ago I read a tweet from one of the people in my network saying, “Twitter is killing blog”. This is probably like an obvious observation judged by the huge success Twitter has achieved as a service for years back.

However, I must say that my experience on both services has been a completely different one.

I think that tweets or tweeter posts by themselves are as ephemeral as they can get. Of course, there are tweets that can stay for long time, especially those that become a trending topic, or get a large number of RTs.

Take for instance my blog on http://andhikapandu.blogspot.com. This blog had lots of activity between 2009-2010 and then it became pretty much dormant in 2011, as a reflection of other professional activity changes. I start to retake it again in 2011, together with my intense activity on twitter, and Facebook.

Well, despite the blog was neglect in 2011, many of its posts still attract audiences. This is mostly because those posts are positioned well in Google and other search engines. Those posts attract dozens of visits every day. In contrast a popular tweet might attract a good number of hits in one or two days, maximum. Afterward it simply gets lots in the long stream of tweets and then disappear.

In other words, I do not buy into the argument that twitter is killing blogs. Twitter is a great service and has allowed me to stay in touch with my network in a very efficient way. However, as a way to publish information it still has its challenges. but for now the tweets are cool, but short lived.

One conclusion i know : “My blog can still survive”.
